6 Visiting the Ports of Call

Here's where the kind of ship you chose for your cruise, and the itinerary, comes into play. On a big ship, you will likely visit the popular ports pf skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan (and possibly Sitka or Victoria, depending on your itinerary) and will have several days at sea to enjoy the glorious glaciers, fjords and wildlife, as well as participate in shipboard activities and relax. On a smallaer ship, you may also visit several smaller ports of call and into wilderness areas that cannot accommodate larger vessels.

On days in port, you need a plan for what you want to see on land (more on that in this section). On days at sea, you will probably want to be out on deck much of the time looking for whales and listening to the commentary of glacier and wildlife experts. There will be plenty of activities offered, but these may be reduced at certain times - for instances, when the ship is scheduled to pass one of the famous glaciers.

Nearly every ship in Alaska has naturalists and other Alaska experts on board to share their expertise on glaciers, geography, plant life, and wildlife. Sometimes these experts are on for the entire cruise and give lectures complete with slides or films. Other times they are National Park Service rangers who come onboard at glaciers sites (particullarly in Glacier Bay) to provide commentary, usually over the ship's PA system. Depending on the ship, local fisherman, Native Alaskans, teachers, photographers, librarians, historians, and anthropologists may come onboard to teach about local history and culture.

Sense of Place Tourism Example

Can you think of a place that has a strong sense of place? How about a placeless place? Most communities have example of both and leisure landscapes can be of both types, as well. Have you ever heard of Paris as being a romantisc place to visit? Does Paris have some magical air or water thar transforms people into romantics? What Paris has developed is a sense of place that includes love and romance, The environtment provides an atmosphere of love based on its history, architecture, culture an mythology.

Many tourists are attracted to specific places because of an established sense of place expectation. For example, certain older retail districts provided particular fascination for vositors by offering experiences of the past or of other places. Thematic retail districts include historic preservation districts, waterfront fisherman's wharf districts, and more playful cowboy towns and Scandinavian or German communities.

The importance of sense of place and tourism is clear. Tourism travel to places for specific reasons. Many of those reasons are because the destination ha a known sense of places. Whether the sense of places is based on religion, art, romance, food, or just for cultural information, people travel for the experience. Places all over the globe provide those experiences for different meanings and at different degrees of personal signifcance
