Egypt Travel Tips: Dry Land vs. Sea Adventures in Egypt

By Eshe Brown

Firm Foot on Dry Land; Desert Locations

Sand-Boarding at Quataneya Dunes near
Cairo

Sand-boarding is similar to snowboarding, but it takes place on desert sand dunes, rather than snow-covered hills and involves riding across or down a dune, while standing with both feet strapped to a board.

Interestingly it's thought the history of sand boarding may be older than the last decade. There are drawings and hieroglyphics that suggest ancient Egyptians sliding down golden dunes of sand on planks or hardened pottery and wood.

Organized jeep tours will take you out to the dunes, as it is about a two-hour drive from
Cairo. The cost will include your transport, boarding equipment, training, and a BBQ in the afternoon to re-energize. Be prepared to get covered in sand!

Quad Biking in the
Sinai Desert, Sharm el Sheikh

Adrenaline junkies will love the quad bike tours operating from Sharm, which take you out to the hauntingly beautiful
Sinai Desert. Most quad tour operators will pick you up from your hotel around 3 pm, when the sun is less intense, for a two and a half-hour trip across the desert towards the Sinai Mountains to watch the sun set.

There are plenty of huge plains where you can open up the throttle and negotiate the dunes, valleys, and canyons. This is an exhilarating way to get a closer glimpse of the extraordinary desert scenery and you do not need any previous riding experience. Tip: Remember to take some well-fitting sunglasses to protect your eyes!

Camel Trekking around the Pyramids,
Cairo

For those who like to take things at a slower pace, camel trekking around the pyramids is a more gentle option.

A visit to the magnificent 5000-year-old pyramids and Sphinx of Giza should not be missed on a visit to
Cairo. View them via camel and then take a private tour into the heart of the best preserved pyramids, the Pyramid of Khafre or the Second Pyramid.

Tours can be arranged locally and take approximately four hours. Tip: Watch out for the front end, as camels have a tendency to spit!

The Wetter the Better; Sharm El Sheikh for Sea Activities

PADI Diving in the Red Sea

The Red Sea is the warmest of the world's seas. It is incredibly rich with flora and fauna - with miles of coral reefs and local species that include marine turtles, Blainsville's beaked whale, white-tip reef sharks, butterfly fish, giant clams, and several species of dolphins.

The
Red Sea Diving College in Sharm el Sheikh offers both scuba diving and open water diving PADI courses for all abilities and levels at affordable prices. For an educational dive, take the PADI National Geographic Open Water Diver course, where you'll learn about marine life conservation and complete your standard open water course. Diving courses include a one-day entry-level dive.

Kitesurfing Junkies

With its wide sandy beaches and constant supply of ocean breezes, Sharm el Sheikh has become the nirvana for kiters.

The Kite Junkie's Kitesurfing Centre located in Nabq offers fully certified IKO instructors so beginners can rest assured that they'll be in safe hands when they learn the ropes. The centre also offers tailor-made packages of instruction to help with any level of experience.

Windsurfing and Sailing

For a more relaxed approach to water sports, glide along the warm waters on a windsurfing board or in a dingy at your own pace. Windsurfing and sailing are ideal for family group activities; children as young as seven can take lessons. There are local diving schools that offer a wide choice of courses.
